Is the colored bracelet the "aids ribbon" of the new millenium? It started with that Lance Armstrong "Live Strong" yellow bracelet that every trendy corporate WHORE wears..and now there are a bunch of different colored ones for different causes.
I have no problem with the cause of fighting cancer. Or aids. Or diabetes..or whateverthefuck. I have a problem with corporate attempts to seem concerned about society. They are not...Nike is behind the LIVE STRONG campaign...like they care about human suffering. Yellow armband or not, they build their overpriced crap in third world sweatshops, using child labor. They put Americans out of jobs to get that bargain, and they didn't even have the courtesy to pass those savings onto the consumer. Now they pretend they give a shit about life!
Or Revlon and it's Run For Life breast cancer pr event. I guess they care about life....life is sacred..unless you are a rabbit or dog, in which case you are vivesected in their labs. And we KNOW they love women..after all, they profited for years by keeping women painting their faces in patriarchal conformity with notions of beauty.
Hey, we all know corporations are liars.
But how about the cattle who wear them? Cause-as-fashion-statement. I garuntee you that 90% of the peons wearing the wristbands are doing it out of peer pressure and fashion. Few probably even know what the fuck the cause IS. It's more important to LOOK like you care than to ACTUALLY care.
If the money spent on the illegal, agressive war in Iraq were spent on breast cancer, it would probably be cured by now.

Re: Those stupid yellow wristbands
Sun, May 8, 2005 - 1:03 PMAt first glance I thought this thread was going to be about those sticky paper wristband you get at a nightclub to show you're old enough to drink.
I hate those paper wrist bands. They stick to your arm hair. And then they're kinda difficult to remove once you've left the bar and had perhaps a couple beers too many. -
-
Re: Those stupid yellow wristbands
Sun, May 8, 2005 - 10:22 PMYeh I hate the club armbands too! I have very small wrists so they either put them on too loose and they fall right off or way too tight so they are cutting my circulation and they are impossible to take off without scissors.
It always amuses me when they do the "put a big magic marker X on the underage kid" -

Mon, May 9, 2005 - 5:38 AMYea, not fond of concert/bar wristbands, or the new fangled bracelets orrrrrrrrrr all the ribbons that are on people's cars. It seems everyone stands for something and wants to display it on thier car, I guess they feel that's all they need to contribute to society. -

Re: Those stupid yellow wristbands
Tue, May 10, 2005 - 3:02 PMSo, I've never been about the 'do what's in' thing. I've always been out of style. But I prefer it that way.
I donate every year to the American Cancer society through work. It's the 1 charity I donate to.
Later we get this package at work that has a wristband (purple) for each of us who donated. I say "damn! I was trying so hard to NOT wear one of these !@#$ things". No one understood.
Now my daughter plays with it, she likes to put it on her dolls (she's 3). -

Re: Those stupid yellow wristbands
Fri, May 20, 2005 - 9:50 PMHa ha... That’s funny I was on the concert wrist band mind set as well... I've often been the one banding people at the gate... Always apologize as I strap down some arm hair.... :)

Re: Those stupid yellow wristbands
Mon, May 23, 2005 - 1:38 PMThen you honor grandpa's memory and your father by being a corporate shill.
You can donate outside of corporations. You can support the fight against cancer without a fashion statement. -

Re: Those stupid yellow wristbands
Mon, May 23, 2005 - 1:46 PMwow... folks its kinda funny to see people talk trash on someones views when you have no real honest to god arguments to back up your own views, now mind you, I happen to think that there are ways to show your support for causes against cancer and other afflictions that we as a society face, but maybe we should all come together and support those that are stricken with these illnesses in one way or another (instead of harping on people for doing so in there own way), but hey thats just MHO

Re: Those stupid yellow wristbands
Mon, May 23, 2005 - 9:11 PMAll joking aside,
If someone wants to choose a certain way to show respect for someone they loved and lost -anyone who scoffs at their method is being a sociopathic dick.
Put it this way, if my mother got killed in a car wreck and I chose to put on a black arm band over, and then someone took issue with that band and knew the backstory anyway, if he were in front of me I'd punch him square in the face. He would deserve it for being an insensitive prick.
Moral of the story: if someone suffers a bad loss, whatever they do about it is their deal. Even if it rubs against another's own political ideals. If that person disagrees with it he just needs to bite his fucking tongue and save the debate for a less painful opportunity. There is absolutely no need at all to kick someone while their down, even if the person suffering is seen to be an idiot. Tough shit. Don't be an asshole and keep the mouth shut.
I know I'm right about that point. And I'd like to have a video camera handy to record the vicious and well deserved ass-beating one would get when telling some grieving people they're wrong in showing how they feel. It would be kind of like an episode of Jackass. -

Wed, May 25, 2005 - 8:34 PMHey, being a victim of a tragedy doesn't excuse one from being a complete idiot.
So a guy's mama dies of breast cancer...that justifies promoting a company that tests make up on dogs????
I would punch HIM in the face, at his mama's funeral. -

Re: Those stupid yellow wristbands
Fri, May 27, 2005 - 1:41 AMHey, pinhead - how much money does NIKE make on those wristbands?
How much advertising? Can YOU see the swoosh on it from 4 feet away?
How much goes to Livestrong?
you wouldn't punch anyone, you loudmouthed pompous ninny. -

Then I guess you really appreciate the sentiment of the bands.
I make no such claims though. Your mother would vomit when she sees what I'd do to her boy, so bring it on. I dare ya. -

Re: Those stupid yellow wristbands
Sun, May 29, 2005 - 11:47 PMGood question Salil, and thanks for asking.
let us begin with the charitable tax break..assuming 1 buck went to the cause from each purchase of the band, NIKE stands to donate approximately 24 million dollars, leaving them a tax break of approxiamtely 20 million, equating to extra profts they can put towards CHILD SLAVE LABOR.
Then of course, there is the even less tangible profit from public relations to be drawn from this, a conservative estimate would be that they get 1 new customer in every 100...no telling what they will buy, but it can safely be assumed it's over 1 million in sales.

Re: Those stupid yellow wristbands
Tue, May 24, 2005 - 7:22 AMI don't see what the big deal is.... If someone wants to wear a wristband to support something or to make a fashion statement then so be it. If you do not like it, then don't wear one. It's that simple. Are people this bored that they get all bent out of shape for a rubber wristband?
Why not pick on the kids that wear pants that are 20 sizes too big? Or is that ok?

Re: Those stupid yellow wristbands
Wed, July 27, 2005 - 10:32 AMi happen to agree with pinworm. ever since i saw a guy banging a chick in a porn wearing nothing but a yellow livestrong bracelet, and then the same thing in another one.. i mean something like that tells you the type of idiots who decide to wear this meaningless plastic badge of pride. "gosh, he can't be all bad, he bought a fuckin plastic bracelet at the gas station."
the truest causes are those carried with the heart, with decisive and true words. i can't say how greatly i respect lance armstrong for overcoming what he did, then to become the tiger woods of the tour de france, but this is CLEARLY a marketing ploy. if the american cancer society promoted livestrong instead of nike, it would be popular amongst a much different and smaller demographic, like those who put money in the salvation army tin every december. do you? i didn't think so.
it's like the guys who wear the FDNY clothes who were probably watching 9/11 from a tv. they do it to get laid. i can't believe you would support such misfounded, shameless promotion. you all ought to be ashamed of yourselves.
if you ask me, it's those who of you who threaten to "destroy" or "punch <one> square in the face" who are the real trolls. it would only be justified that those bracelets give you cancer because if you really cared you would donate your time instead of your money and trendy fashion sense.
and salil, he adequately answered your question fully. you just don't want to admit it, because you know nike benefits greatly in sleazy corporate ways. it's just like ted turner donating $10 billion to the UN. he sees most of that money again in tax breaks anyway, and it makes him appear to the unsuspecting as a swell guy.
so i agree, 90% of those who wear those wristbands really couldn't care less about anyone but themselves. at least this is my impression of those who i meet who wear them. -
-
Re: Those stupid yellow wristbands
Fri, July 29, 2005 - 2:08 AMyou've got to be insane.
So WHAT if porn stars wear livestrong bracelets? Are porn stars bad people? You watched that porn movie - you saw the bracelet, it made you think about cancer.
Good job Porn actor!
You think that when someon donates 10 million they get back 10 million in tax breaks? That's ridiculous.
Nike gets a tax break. The Lance Armstrong foundation gets $1 for every band it sells.
Of COURSE its a marketing ploy - it markets Livestrong. People don't look at the bands and think 'ooooh, Nike!' they think 'oh yeah, cancer'.
and pinworm did not answer my question. I asked how much nike made ON THE BANDS, I did not ask 'in what ways does Nike benefit' from the bands.
<so i agree, 90% of those who wear those wristbands really couldn't care less about anyone but themselves. at least this is my impression of those who i meet who wear them. >
And so this is what it boils down to. A couple of kids who always felt left out of the 'in crowd' and now hold a grudge against anyone who embraces in anything remotely faddish, because it reminds you of how you were alienated as a child and coped by imagining that you were somehow 'above the fray'.
Its a transparent ploy. -

Re: Those stupid yellow wristbands
Fri, July 29, 2005 - 3:19 PMSalil, the Livestrong Foundation gets a dollar for every bracelet...most of it goes to administration and promotion. Cancer research probably gets about 10 cents from that dollar.
Speak to anyone who's worked at such a foundation about where the money goes.

Re: Those stupid yellow wristbands
Mon, August 1, 2005 - 4:42 AMWhat does this have to do with Nike, and corporate sponsorship?
And pinny, I have close friends who work for the LA foundation, one of which I've known since 1992, and she'll be more than happy to tell you that people who get on the waiting list for wristbands donate WAY more than the $1 they need to in order to get a wristband.
Its the same idea behind the ride for the roses. If all the money went straight to research and everything, tons more would go straight to the issue at hand, but by spending the money on the event itself, one raises awareness and concern.

Re: Those stupid yellow wristbands
Thu, August 25, 2005 - 4:25 PMJust so everyone knows, Nike makes no money from the sell of the Livestrong bracelets. Nike made an agreement with Lance Armstrong and the Lance Armstrong Foundation that all proceeds would go to the foundation. I know because I have seen financial records on it, and no, they were not doctored.
