Many speak of this town with reverence..it appears to be a haven for art and artists and indeed, has generated some of the best art the US has ever produced.

Bullshit.

Santa Fe is a town of rigid conformity. Civic law demands that no building be over 4 storys tall, and they all must be ADOBE BROWN, even if the buildings are not actually made of ADOBE. The buildings are the same color as the earth around that part of New Mexico. You would think that this would be great..unintrusive human habitation..the result is somewhat different however..what you end up with is a monotonous, monochromatic urban scape.

Everywhere you turn, it's brown. Brown brown brown brown brown. I don't care if I never see that fucking color again, and I was only there 4 days. Growing up there must be a nightmare.

At this time of year it is rather bleak. It's winter, but Santa Fe only gets JUST cold ENOUGH to sustain a few inches of snow which quickly melts and turns everything into mud. BROWN mud. The trees are leafless and bare. You eventually get the feeling you are in one giant mud puddle.

The city boasts a huge number of galleries. For it's size this is true. There really is little else in the way of industry there. Canyon Road is considered the high culture area. The galleries are piled up next to one another, and you quickly learn that they are indistinguishable. Some are folk, some are contemporary, some show ancient artifacts, and some are SOUTHWESTERN. But once you have seen one Pueblo Blanket for 2500 dollars you have seen them all. The street is filled with looky-loos walking up and down..typically white folks in their late 50's.

You cannot swing your arms without hitting a dirty Subaru.

Driving around Santa Fe is an excersice in idiocy. Natrually, the roads are shit.

The people who live there fall into a few basic groups. You have the liberal aging hippie crowd who drone on about what a great city Santa Fe is. They like to wear broaches and native trinkets they pick up at the oh-so-quaint plaza where the indians are exploited for their Kitsch value. You have the cowboys...seriously. In 2004, the age of the industrial feed lot. These fuckers wear cowboy hats and jeans. Reminds you that you are close to Texas. Then there are the indians. Hopi, Adobe, Publo, Navajo, and Assante. They sell cheap trinkets in town or work in one of the BILLION casinos around New Mexico. They appear in post cards in the gift shops too. Lastly, you have the spanish..the last vestiges of european colonialism are evident in the mish mash of native and catholic religion that people practice in the state. They also do the working jobs like construction and garbage collection.

One cool thing though..the Hopi got into a fight with the missionaries a few hundred years ago, and managed to win a battle where they stuck the missionaries heads on stakes and left the church to decay as a monument to the victory. To this day, the Hope forbid anyone from going to this particular church and it decays still. Right on.

Public Outrage Forces Ban on Vessel-Based Seal Hunting
Not until the 1980s did inhumane seal hunting practices, including clubbing and shooting of baby “whitecoat” harp seals, begin to foment public outrage.

the European Parliament banned the import of baby harp seal pelts from Canada in 1984. Meanwhile, the Britain-based (IFAW) called for a boycott of all Canadian seafood that same year. These actions forced the Canadian government to ban vessel-based seal hunting in Canadian waters (although land-based seal hunting was still allowed),

Recently Greenland has banned
the import of Canadian seal pelts

The government of Greenland
butchered creatures and of other animals dying in traps or factory farms
The
Canadian Government PAYS to have over three hundred thousand baby harp
seals clubbed and skinned alive per year. When the seal hunters
slaughtered 30,000 seals over their quota, did the Canadian Government
punish them? No Way! They just raised the quota. Canadian Government
ice breakers even help seal hunting vessels get through the ice to
where the seal herds are, free of charge. In December, 2003,
National Resources Minister John Efford attended his first cabinet
meeting flaunting a thigh length seal coat, boasting how the seals were
hunted in Newfoundland, adding, "I think it's a great industry in
Newfoundland. I've promoted it for years and years." This follows the
pattern he's stuck to since the 1990's. In 1998 he said, "I would like
to see the six million seals, or whatever number is out there, killed
and sold, or destroyed or burned. I do not care what happens to them.
The more they kill, the better I will love it." It's great that Canada
has put such a concerned environmentalist and conservationist in charge
of natural resources nationally.

Year after year Canadian fishermen
have said 'screw you' to the rest
Irks animal rights groups with pro-seal hunt stance

Sunday, December 14, 2003
Natural Resources Minister John Efford wears a sealskin coat as he talks to reporters after attending a cabinet meeting at Parliament Hill in Ottawa on Saturday.

CP

OTTAWA - Natural Resources Minister John Efford attended his first cabinet meeting Saturday wearing a sealskin coat and was promptly clubbed down by animal rights activists.

"They were hunted off Newfoundland ... and the coat was made in St. John's," Efford said, as he proudly modelled the silver-grey, thigh-length jacket. "I think it's a great industry in Newfoundland. I've promoted it for years and years."

Rebecca Aldworth, seal campaigner for the International Fund for Animal Welfare, condemned the minister's fashion choice.

"It's in very bad taste," said Aldworth, whose group numbers two million members worldwide. "He's promoting the largest and cruelest slaughter of marine mammals in the world."

Since the time he was Newfoundland's fisheries minister in the 1990s, Efford has been one of the brashest boosters of the commercial seal hunt, blaming seals for eating millions of tonnes of fish.

Efford butted heads with the IFAW in 1998, when he was seeking to have Ottawa increase the allowable seal cull, while activists went on a high-profile campaign to shut the hunt down.

"I would like to see the six million seals, or whatever number is out there, killed and sold, or destroyed or burned. I do not care what happens to them," Efford said in the Newfoundland House of Assembly on May 4, 1998. "The more they kill, the better I will love it."

Efford won his battle against the IFAW, and the seal cull has increased steadily since the 1990s. This year, Ottawa announced the largest seal quota ever, allowing 975,000 animals to be harvested over the next three years.

Still, animal rights groups are fighting back. In June this year, the U.S. Humane Society took out an ad in the New York Times calling on American tourists to boycott Canada. In November, 159 members of the British House of Commons signed a resolution condemning the seal hunt. And just two weeks ago, nine U.S. senators backed a resolution calling on Ottawa to stop the "cruel and needless" hunt.

"I'm surprised that John Efford's been included in the cabinet. As far as we're concerned, he's an embarrassment," said Andrew Plumbly, director of the Montreal-based animal rights group Global Action Network. "The fact of the matter is that the seal hunt has given Canada a black eye internationally."

Efford said he'll continue to wear his coat and support the sealing industry despite the protests.

An organizer for the Green party in Newfoundland and Labrador has resigned because of the party's opposition to sealing.

Lori-Ann Martino, who was a candidate in Labrador riding in the 2004 federal election, says she cannot abide the party's opposition to a commercial seal hunt.

"This is a terrible strategy," said Martino, who feels the Green party is attempting to recruit voters who are morally opposed to the seal hunt but may not be informed about it.

The Hypocrisy of the Canadian Government

The Canadian government has been making plenty of accusations against
seal defenders. They have even gone so far as to fabricate lies that
they actually then appear to believe.

For example, Canadian Minister of Natural Resources John Efford debated
Captain Paul Watson on the seal slaughter in April.

Captain Watson was on his ship at sea off the coast of Newfoundland and
Efford was at his desk in Ottawa.

Efford is the former Newfoundland Minister of Fisheries who publicly
has advocated the extermination of the seals.

During the debate, Efford was not interested in talking science or
facts concerning the seal hunt. He did not want to talk about seals at
all. Instead he accused Captain Watson of raising millions of dollars
and stuffing it in offshore bank accounts. He then called Captain
Watson a coward for refusing to debate him.

Captain Watson said that he had never refused to debate the Minister
and demanded that Efford set a time and place and he would meet him
there. Efford ignored the challenge and went on to talk about how seal
defenders were gorging themselves on lamb and veal on the Farley Mowat
while protesting the killing of seals and called the hunt opponents
hypocrites.

When Captain Watson pointed out that the Farley Mowat was a vegan ship
and meat and fish were not served in the ship's galley, Efford
plucked ignored that response and immediately plucked another
fabrication from his propaganda kit. Captain Watson also demanded that
the Minister produce evidence before making accusations of hoarding
money in offshore accounts. "Do you think," said Captain Watson to
Efford, "that it is responsible for a Federal Minister to be making
unsubstantiated accusations?

Efford refused to answer.

It was a bizarre debate. What struck Captain Watson about Efford is
that he appeared to actually believe everything he was saying.

Captain Watson pointed out that Sea Shepherd finances were an open book
and that the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society was not a wealthy
organization. In fact it is a rather small organization with fewer than
one million dollars in contributions annually and most of the budget is
spent on the operation of our ships.

Captain Watson also pointed out that it was interesting that such bogus
accusations were being made by a Minister of the most scandal ridden
and corrupt government in Canadian history. Canadians knew what Captain
Watson was referring to without him having to explain the details.

For non-Canadians, this is a little primer on the current elected
members of the Canadian government.

Can you imagine working for a company that has a little more than 300
employees and has the following statistics:

30 have been accused of spousal abuse.
9 have been arrested for fraud,
14 have been accused of writing bad cheques.
95 have directly or indirectly bankrupted at least 2 businesses.
4 have done time for assault.
55 cannot get a credit card due to bad credit.
12 have been arrested on drug related charges.
4 have been arrested for shoplifting.
16 are currently defendants in lawsuits.
62 have been arrested for drunk driving in the last year.

Such is the record of the 301 Members of the Canadian Parliament.

This same Parliament unanimously endorses the annual slaughter of
seals. In other words we can find 62 drunk drivers in the Parliament of
Canada and not one compassionate defender of seals. One third of all
Members of Parliament have bankrupted a business and now are in charge
of managing Canadian resources including the fisheries.

The statistics listed above do not even include the $100 million
Canadian Unity slush fund that the Liberal government of Canada used to
pay bribes and provide "incentives" for Liberal members of
Parliament, including shopping sprees for the wife of former Prime
Minister Jean Chretien.

The good news is that The Liberal government of Prime Minister Paul
Martin is not expected to survive next week's vote of confidence on
the Canadian budget. It looks like there will be a Canadian Federal
election this summer. The bad news is that the same group of losers may
all get re-elected. Why because the government of Canada simply does
not attract people with the education, skills and talent to hold down a
real job.

However, the election will be an opportunity to see where the
candidates stand on the issue of killing seals.

Of all the political parties in Canada only the Federal Green Party has
a policy of opposition to the seal hunt.

Captain Paul Watson said, "I am not speaking for Sea Shepherd because
this is a political issue but I am speaking as a Canadian when I say
that Canadians should not contribute to or support pro-sealing
candidates and should encourage those candidates who are prepared to
oppose this obscenity that has given Canada such a bad reputation
around the world."

Paul Watson elaborated by saying, "I know that governments should not
be elected or defeated on single issues but the seal slaughter is an
issue that reflects the morality of the candidates involved. What kind
of person could endorse the senseless, cruel clubbing of helpless baby
seals? The answer is the same type of person who abuse their spouses,
write bad checks, drive under the influence, commit assault and fraud
and run businesses into the ground - in other words, the
irresponsible and egotistical Parliamentary members who have so
shamefully sold out Canada to line their own pockets at the expense of
the people and the nation. These are not the kind of people we need
protecting our forests, our fisheries, our wilderness and the economy.
Unfortunately these are the kind of people we've got. It's time to
throw the bums out and bring in more responsible and more compassionate
people with integrity and a sense of responsibility to the future.

For the last seven years about a 100 women a year come dressed in red to honor our belly and womb in multitudes of ways. Brothers, please let the women know if you choose. It is an awesome way for the women to viscerally honor themselves.
There is among other things, belly dancing (some tribal style this year), belly healing, belly painting, belly communication, belly singing, belly honoring. I am the organizer and for the last seven years I also founded Priestess Path Apprenticeship on the East Coast, Women in Power and Daughters of the Earth Gathering. This year it happens on November 5th in Massachusetts.

I am among many things your sister, a dancer, a singer, ceremonialist and women's empowerment trainer since my early twenties. Tomorrow is my 46th birthday. What matters to me right now is the state of the world and women's power in relationship to what is next on our planet, carrying out the visions that come through me, and knowing that we can enact outrageous beautiful ceremonies that liberate and reshape our future. Needless to say, I have a great life in this realm because women are amazing as you know. If you don't know, come hang out with more amazing women and they will mirror your own beauty back. Right? You don't need a conference for that however. We are everywhere!

The Women's Belly and Womb Conference was a vision from my first firewalk. After walking about eighty times over the coals and being under the full moon in the snow, I had a vision that we must gather as women and truly honor our shared stories of our bellies and wombs as well as activating our power here.

If women come the night before we have both bellydancing as well as Sheri Winston's, The Maps of the Clitoris (fascinating actually) and the opening of a live Red Tent. I've been very busy this year including recording a CD of my belly chants that I named Women Rise Up. Shawna Carol will be here too, recording artist of Goddess Chant. Pass the word if you can because we actually could use these kind of days for women all over our planet. Many blessings to each of you. Keep the magic of our bellies alive, awake and sacred. Oh yes, if you want to check out more go to members.aol.com/alisastar/BellyWombConf2005.html
Many blessings, ALisa

Well, Live 8 is over. The star-studded extravaganza to “raise awareness” of poverty in Africa, scheduled to coincide with the G8 summit in Gleneagles, a meeting of representatives of the 8 largest economies in the world.

What did Geldorf, Bono, McCartney, et al. accomplish?

They probably put on some good shows. They gave the establishment media an orgy of celebrity coverage. They rubbed shoulders with well-heeled fans (not the little people) and paid small fortunes to members of the hospitality industry in Scotland. They may have even made some of their audiences aware that Africa is an oozing, festering sore.

But what did they do for Africa? Frank Cudjoe, of the organization Imani: The Center for Humane Education in Ghana, says,” Highlighting the problems of Africa is a noble thing, but beyond that, stars' solutions to the problems are suspect." Cudjoe believes that the proposals put forth by the celebrities at Live 8 only help prop up corrupt governments. According to the Sunday Times of London:

“The £20m it [Live 8] raises will go not on poverty but on itself. Not a penny will go to Africa. Indeed a potential fundraising opportunity, which might at least have bought a planeload of anti-Aids drugs, has become an exhibition of high-tech media co-ordination and a celebrity fiesta. Geldof has given up on money. He rephrases Lennon’s ‘All you need is love’ as ‘All you need is awareness’. “

I have already written about why debt forgiveness for Africa is a bad idea; I won’t rehash it. I’d like to take it down a level. Let’s look at what went on at Live 8 and what goes on in the celebrities lives.

The day of the performance, while millions in Africa do not know where their next meal is coming from, or whether they will even have a next meal, the stars were served an opulent buffet which included filet mignon and lobster. Luxury hotels for miles around were sold out – hotels that cost up to $500 per room per night. Brad Pitt acted pissy about not having a private dressing room, while hundreds of thousand of non-Muslims in Darfur are homeless because of ethnic and religious persecution. Sir Paul McCartney threw a tantrum because soccer star Beckham’s wife first missed his opening performance, and then flitted off to talk to some other celeb.

Actually, McCartney probably is the best example of what these celebrities are really about. When his dead wife, Linda, a US citizen, died after living in the UK for 30 years, McCartney spent several hundreds of thousands of dollars to get her sizeable estate (approximately US$300,000,000) probated in New York, rather than pay the 40% death tax demanded by the Exchequer of the Crown. You see, it’s all about money, power, and fame. Celebrities like those at Live 8 are just like any other business. They know a good publicity op when they see one and will do anything they need to in order to exploit the opportunity.

I’m tired of wieners like Bono telling me what I need to be doing. What is he doing? How many African orphans has he adopted? How sacrificially has he given to charity? How many young students has he opened his house up to?

I will have to admit that I may have to backtrack on my opinion of Geldof’s intellect. When asked what he really thought Africa needed, he responded, “Read Adam Smith.” I hope that was a heartfelt sentiment. As we have seen throughout modern history, collectivism in its many forms (fascism, socialism, communism, etc.) is a murderous system. Free enterprise would do more for Africa than the $500 billion handed to it since 1965. It will do more than the $40 billion in proposed debt relief. In my opinion, if any more aid or debt relief is allotted to Africa, it needs to have heavy strings attached in the form of democratic elections, free trade, and social liberty for all ethnicities and religions. But this is not the overwhelming message coming from Live 8. No, Live 8, for the most part, was all about taking from the “rich” (read: hard-working taxpayers in countries with relatively free economies) and giving to the “poor” (read: corrupt, despotic regimes who don’t care that their own people are starving). I can just see Robert Mugabe laughing all the way to his Swiss bank.

Take the current "Revlon Walk for Life" promotion in which they organize a marathon, the proceeds going to breast cancer research. What could POSSIBLY be wrong with that? Breast cancer is a serious concern...who would dare complain?

Me. I would complain. While I like money going to breast cancer research, I don't think for a minute that Revlon genuinely gives a shit about breast cancer. To them, "Breast Cancer" is a marketing opportunity..a chance to associate their name with the moral highground, appealing to the growning demographic of 18 to 35 year old women concerned about such issues. Brand Mapping on the socially concerned side of the tracks. Might get them a tax break too.

Like any corporation, Revlon is amoral. What matters is money. It really chaps my hide to see such companies cheapen social concern for brand appeal while committing atrocious acts at the gritty end of their production line. Revlon experiments on animals, including dogs. This isn't experiments designed to fight breast cancer, they are designed to see if their makeup's chemicals burn skin.

Then there's The Body Shop. Although they used to put "Not Tested On Animals" stickers on their products, they bought the ingredients from contractors who did the animal testing FOR them. Thank god for class action! Now they say "Against Animal Testing"..as if that were meaningful in any objective way. It is corporate epiphany marketing, describing philosophy as logo.

Or Nike....they were the power behind those faddish yellow wristbands that say "Live Strong". They are possibly the LEAST concerned with human life of any company out there. How can they claim to be concerned about suffering and cancer when THEY RUN SWEATSHOPS???? Fucking children are putting their crap together in indonsesia, people are dying from heat prostration in their columbo factory, and they make a couple of yellow wristbands to show fattned Americans that they care.

she was angry from the start, trying to argue with me, talking down to me, and asking me what my problem was. i finally got frustrated with her tone and bitchiness and said, "you have a really bad attitude right now, so i'm gonna need you to chill out a little"

her response: "excuse me. you are not my mother and you are not my boss. i don't have to take that kind of abuse from you. i don't have to be nice to you, i just represent this company. don't you ever talk to me like that again." *CLICK*

that's right! she hung up on me, for no real reason. i called back, and a man answered. the dialogue went as follows:
long story short, i got her name and complained to the manager, who said he would review the tapes and reprimand her (what about fire her?), but i will never get that time back.

Reasons to hate Starbucks

There are many reasons to hate Starbucks. For one thing, the coffee tastes like shit..but that's just my opinion.

There is the "Fair Trade" Coffee issue, which Starbucks remains totally silent on. You see, to get that 5 dollar Starbucks coffee from plant to your cup requires all kinds of middlemen between here and Columbia. Or Sumatra. Or Guatemala....the worst of them are the buyers who deal directly with the farmers. They are known as "cyotes" and have a habit of ripping off the farmer by lying to them about the market prices..and looping them into deceptive contracts.

To counter this, a few organizations have sprung up which support collectives of farmers..these are called "fair trade" groups and they pay the farmers in the collective more than the lowest possible price. Some of the profits are turned into education and medical programs.

Starbucks wants none of this, of course. It refuses to sell fair trade coffee and will continue to do so until the marketing department realizes it's a good idea.

But that's just one issue..what bugs me most about Starbucks is the "Semiotics of Intellectualism" they have perfected, fooling even strong liberals into beliving the atmosphere inside a starbucks is a bastion of artsy thought and freedom.

Starbucks is like McDonalds in it's corporate policy of uniformity among individual stores. They want a customer who lives in St. Louis to be able to go into a Starbucks in San Diego and feel right at home. This policy is anti-thetical to the original atmosphere of coffee-houses past that they are exploiting.

There was indeed a time when coffee houses WERE centers of liberal arts movements..poetry readings, new bands, public awareness campaigns, and untold numbers of heated poltical conversations. Back then, no coffee house was the same. None belonged to a chain. The mainstream conservatives thought such places were a threat, which meant that they were serving their purpose.

Starbucks swooped in and killed them all. That's it's policy. When seeking out a new location, Starbucks picks a corner with a successful coffeehouse already on it and moves in across the street. Sometimes it buys out the place. It doesn't always work though..for some coffeehouses manage to hold on due to NOT CHARGING 5 BUCKS A COFFEE.

I wandered into a Starbucks early yesterday morning..my first foray into such a place in years. I say the "semiotics of intellectualism" everywhere. They were advertising Elvis Costello CD's, and mixed Jazz CD's...they were selling New York Times papers.....what a deceptive trick. Jazz discs or not, it's a corporate enterprise run by white collar cubical slaves far away. It really doesn't take much to fool a suburban liberal who swoons for coffee stink and acid jazz. Peel away the promo cd's and it's all corporate boilerplate.

I am split on this issue....

On the one hand, there are thousands of people who's living depends on making a profit from produced entertainment products..it's not just actors or rock stars, it's sound engineers and the clerks at the video stores too.

But I have a friend who works for Warner Music. He says that from song writing to manufacturing and retailing a music CD, it only costs Warner about 5 bucks per CD. The retailer can mark that up by 2 dollars to cover all costs making it viable to sell a CD for 7 dollars. Yet, most new CD's are in the 20 dollar range because they feel the market can bare it and they are greedy..so the profit margin is HUGE all along the way. This mark up is why Jessica Simpson can afford a mansion in the Hollywood Hills for doing little more than making noises infront of a microphone.

Movies are a little different, but not much. It might cost 200 million for a standard hollywood production, and if the film makes 10 million in profit, all the people who helped make the movie and all promotion is covered EXCEPT the celebs, who can ask for 20 million plus in pay all by themselves. When theaters charge 12.50 per ticket, you only need perhaps a 200 theaters nation wide and 500 world wide showing the film for 3 weeks, then moderate rentals of the DVD or video for 6 months following theatrical release to make that money.

What I am saying is that in a free market, it's not the producers who should dictate the nature of the market, but the consumers.

Production companies complaining about internet technology and trying to kill it in the courts are a bit like buggy makers in 1905, trying to stop the production of the automobile because it hurt them. You either change to fit the market or die..those are the rules. Unfortuneately, producers don't see it that way and rather than change the nature of their work to fit the market, they are asking the government to force the market to remain static..in order to protect their stupidly inflated mark-ups.

They should be doing at least one of two things...1) develop interent distribution that they can profit from instead of protecting old fashioned per/unit production or 2) be dropping these huge margins so that their products are competitively priced..attracting sales and customers away from illegal downloading. This might mean Tom Hanks only gets 4 million per pic instead of 30 million..and people will go to the movies to get out of the house and eat popcorn more readily for a fee of 7 dollars instead of 12.

My father in law puts it this way: "I bought the Beatles White Album back in 1968 when it was new..then I had to buy it again in 77 for the 8 Track..then I bought it again in 85 on cassette, then I bought it AGAIN in 97 on CD..I am NOT FUCKING BUYING IT AGAIN!!" He paid the mark up several times over..it's been the customer who has bore the brunt of techonolgical change, not the producers....until now that is.

It's hard to feel sorry for entertainment companies. After all, they are the ones who really screw the artists. They loop hungry young artists into binding contracts in which they take the lions share of the price gouging and absolutely control the content of the art..making nothing but market safe pap. God only knows how much good art has been kaiboshed by record company excecs afraid of trying something new. And successful artists are hard to feel sorry for too...they don't really deserve 100 million for rapping about how they load their gun and shoot cops or even for strumming a guitar. Let's pay teachers and nurses more and entertainers less!

There is a growing movement afoot to keep downloading legal because on political grounds. Information should be free, but mostly the entertainment industry is now forced to adjust it's price gouging because of the will of the market. While I can understand them wanting to prevent illegal re-sale of their product, I cannot find it in myself to feel sorry for them when their stuff gets distributed for free.

It's silly to put something out there and expect to remain in control of it FOLLOWING it's sale. I can do whatever I like with what I buy.

My wife brought home "The Terminal" two nights ago.

"The Terminal" is one of those movies with mega-hit deliberately sewn into the fabric. Speilberg directs, Hanks acts, Oprah drools, Soccer Mom's spend.

The story is loosely based on actual events, but as usual producers got nervous without a love interest and created one starring Catherine Zeta Jones.

What's most frightening about the movie is that there is hardly a frame without a corporate logo in it. It takes place in the international terminal of JFK. Most such places look the same..you have a Borders, a Starbucks, A Burger King etc. As most scenes take place in the terminal, most shots have the neon logo shining proudly in the background. If you have read Naomi Kleins "No Logo" and seen this movie, I am sure you found yourself mentally immersed in the book again.

To call such rampant advertising "realism" based on the images of our daily lives is naieve. Each and every appearance of those neon signs and the duration of those appearances were laid out in liscensing agreements, and each one paid for. It wasn't as if Spielberg just showed up at JFK and accidentally caught those logos in the frame. The reason the pitch was so successful was the potential for advertising inherent in the premise.

"The Terminal" takes product placement to an entirely new level, including the staff of these companies as characters in the film with speaking lines. The products are not really placed, the company name just glows in the corner as the characters speak. Remember, this Speilberg guy is the one who realized the power of shamelesss corporate promotion in another Hanks/Speilberg/Winfrey piece of garbage known as "Cast Away"...a 120 minute Fed-ex commercial.

When you look at urban sprawl these days, you have a similar experience, as if the mental landscape is cluttered with the same stores over and over...each subdivision in America looks pretty much the same..when you get to the commercial areas of the burbs you see big "plazas" with the Starbucks, the Pizza Hut, The Burger King..all the same stores with all the same stuff. It hardly matters if you are in Rancho Cucamonga or Colorado Springs or Newmarket, Ontario. The experience of watching this movie was like driving out to the burbs.

but i don't know how to french braid it. i mean, i have an idea, but i always screw it up as soon as i start it. i want to learn how to do it easily and correctly. i know people can do it, so why can't i?

Q. Is it possible to catch anything from being in a hot tub?

A. It's very rare, but it happens. My girlfriend got pregnant from being in a hot tub. I wasn't there, but she said there were only other guys there. It's lucky there weren't any other girls there, or they might have gotten pregnant, too. I know it was the hot tub because she said she couldn't have sex for a couple months for personal reasons, so she had no other way to get pregnant.

We're going to name the baby after one of her friends. I'm very proud. But if you don't want to get pregnant, I'd advise always wearing clothing, to filter microscopic crawlies like sperms and infectious diseases. Cotton stops them cold.

I feel sorry for people in the bad old days, when no one knew to wear clothing in hot tubs. Man, they must have all been masses of pregnant, seeting, dripping infectious diseases.

There is a guy at work (actually, he is the BOSS) and he's cheating on his wife with a subordinate.

Now, I personally don't care WHO he fucks or who she fucks. They are adults, they can do that if they want.

Problem is, he's a bad boss and everyone wants to get rid of him. HR complaints have been flooding in against him lately for all manner of things from sexist comments to labor law violations. He doesn't do anything he is supposed to and dumps all of his work on his assistants, who are getting mighty pissed. As a matter of fact, he showed up yesterday for a meeting early in the morning and within 20 minutes, booked off sick, leaving ME to conduct the meeting. I was only prepared for MY part of it, not the whole thing. She then called in too. Sick. When he left he said to his second in command "If my wife calls, tell her I am at the corporate head office, if my boss calls, tell her I went home sick.".

I work as a fraud investigator for the company, and I usually look into Workers Comp fraud and general embezzlement. I used to be a PI and investigated many an extra-marital affair...so I have a skill set that is perfect for this situation.

People keep asking me to come up with something to get rid of this guy.

The stresses have been piling up against him..the complaints have his bosses eyeballing him, and this affair must be a stress, despite the fact that it must be thrilling. He and he go on long lunches..together but through seaparate doors. In order to prevent her losing money for these long lunches, he has been adjusting her time clock, paying her for time she isn't there. That, in my opinion, and the opinion of the comany is TIME FRAUD.

Anyhow, my chance came yesterday. I answered the phone and it was his wife..she asked for him and I said "Oh, he went home sick early today...you mean he is not there?". I then began to call his house and hang up when his wife calls, just for stoking the fire at home. Hey, I "didn't know". He didn't tell ME to lie to his boss and wife.

Ain't office politics dirty? It's amazing how dumb guys get when there is sex involved.

When someone you don't know and have little chance of actually meeting wants to be your "friend," what do you do? Personally, I accept, because I'm a wuss, but then I go back a day or two later and remove them. I know i have a lot of friends here, but I really do know 90% of them. Sorry if you got purged, but really, you aren't a better person for knowing me, so why pretend?

So people, I urge you to purge your list of "friends." Tribe is good because it is about staying contact with your real friends. Sorry Tank. Let me know when you hit 10,000 friends. Maybe you'll win a Tribe mug. I hear Mark P is a great potter. At least I think that's what they said. It was a loud bar. Hic.

Grrrrr, it's always something, and they never fix anything. For two years now, the roof has leaked. I don't even know how many times we've told them. My bedroom window is cracked and if I close it just a bit too hard it will fall out. They've known about that for a year. I've asked them three times for a deadbolt on the front door. It's illegal to rent a house in california without a deadbolt on the main entry. The door jamb is completely stripped where the bolts go for plate that the door knob latches into. So the plate and bolts have tons of play and probably in about two weeks it will probably fall out and our front door won't close anymore. Actually last night I got up and found the front door wide open. The landlord knows about that too. It was super windy last night and it blew down our fence. I was trying to lock all the doors in the house and found that the side door doesn't even lock! Our landlord knows that because the majority of the time he comes into the house that way. They also show up unannouced all the time (also illegal). Now, for the most part we've put up with it because the rent is really cheap. Now they want to raise it! They haven't told us (the current tenants) but they told the new person that will be moving in. When they do tell us we're going to tell them either we're moving out, they need to fix all of these problems and rent legally, or we're turning them into the housing authority.

I don't know much about the legal or tax part of it, how it would work out or whatever. I do know, however, that as it is, people that practive polygamy get married then get divorced before getting married to the next person. The women then go and collect welfare, yet they all still live in the same household. Doesn't seem very fair to the taxpayers.

However, I feel that if it's among consenting adults and everyone is happy with the situation, then it's fine (I'm not into polygamy what-so-ever, but that's a personal choice). I'm not just talking about a patriarchal type polygamy. It could go either way.

Nobody says "Keen" anymore. Even fewer use the term "the bee's knees" without intending to sound archaic.

And that's it, isn't it? Those expressions are SO old that they have retro-cool. Post-modern chic.

But expressions of the 70's and 80's have not reached that age yet. They lack the power of half a century behind them, and if used they can make the speaker seem very strange indeed.

Take pop music. In the 80's, artists suddenly became inexplicably fond of the word "heat". "Heat" implied sex, law, intensity, pressure and, sometimes, high temperature. Expressions with the word HEAT in them became pop song cliches: Running in the heat, feel the heat, can you feel the heat, the heat is on heat heat heat heat heat.

"Heartbeat" is another one. The poetic catch-all for romantic themes. It symbolized the core, exitement, arousal and emotion. It was used in nearly every song and in every television script. Don Johnson, of Miami Vice fame put out a pop album back in early '87 called "Heartbeat" and the lead single from it was called..you guessed it. Heartbeat. And who can forget Tiffany's prodigious cover of "I think We're Alone Now"? As the song fades, she says "hearbeat" 4 times! I have not heart the word used in a song since 1989. Oh well..at least it was never as rampant as "Extreme" or "X-treme".

SPAZ! This was everywhere in the schools when I was a kid. Everyone who was a little idiotic was a "spaz". It was so common that characters in flims were often called "spaz" (Remember MEATBALLS? "Spaz..spaz..spaz...spaz.."). It was short for spaztic, as in PALSY, and went the way of the dodo in the 90's.

In the 70's, things were "Dynamite". It wasn't just JJ on Good Times who was saying it....it was almost everyone. "It's Dynamite" became an advertising tagline. The 70's were a decade notoritous for overstated, gleeful expressions. "Fantastic" really took off in the 70's. Back then, everything was "Super"...just put SUPER infront of anything, and sell twice as much of it. "Supermarket, superglue, supersaver, supergas, supercar.." all had their origins in this decade.

"Disco"...like or hate the music genre (I kind of like it), the word "Disco" itself became slapped on everything, be it music related or not. There was DISCOpizza, DISCOdeodorant and DISCOunderpants. You know, the europeans still use "Disco" when talking about clubs.

"Staff" became "Crew Members" or "Team Members" or "Baristas".

Let's face it...they are drones. Worker bees. Proletariat. The rise of the Consultant Guru led to the management-speak metamorphasis of job titles.

Having the official title of "Associate" ads a scent of professional importance to a menial job. It made people less ashamed to admit they were bagging groceries at the Albertson's when asked the always-painful social question "So, what do you do?" because for a moment, the person who heard the word "associate" might think they were a lawyer or architecht...you know..one of those jobs where you can afford higher status-symbol material goods.

It implies an education and intelligence. Do you REALLY think the Custodial Engineer has a degree in Engineering? Well..these days he or she just might, but you know what I mean.

It's not just the drones. Almost every job you can think of. "Teachers" are becoming "Educators". That sounds more socially important..it stresses the impact teachers have on society. Well, at least PART of it..many teachers don't educate, they indoctrinate. Some don't even do that. Many teachers would flunk their own tests without the answer sheet.

"Store Detectives"..already an inflated title in previous decades are now "Asset Protection Team Leaders".

People who input tedious data into corporate machines are no longer "Data Entry Personnel", they are "Information Control Specialists".

And lest we forget the ever-helpful profession of Self-Help! It is a field in which you can make up absolutely ANYTHING and have it sound professional. "Life Coach", "Happiness Expert", or "Actualization Specialist".

The upgrade for the job title never seems to come with an upgrade for the wage, does it?

Not a rant on drinking or anything. Ok, a friend and I just got into a debate on whether or not drinking is okay. I personally don't touch alcoholic drinks. It's just the way I am. Now...he thinks in order to have a good time at a party, you need to drink. I believe a person can still have a good time dancing, socializing, etc. without having to consume alcohol. I'm not saying you can't have alcoholic beverages at a party though...

All I'm asking is...does drinking necessarily equate to having a good time at a party? Am I alone in thinking you don't have to?
